Repair config sys file

Pls Help! What to search discussions comments polls. April edited January in Hardware. Since a few days, my OS has been refusing to start, going straight to the screen which asks which configuration you'd like to start windows with i.

It is corrupt, absent, or not writable. I tried a repair with my XP disc, but couldn't seem to get the screen up which asks for 'r' if you want to repair, thought, with the disc in the drive, on one occasion windows did boot, i got a message saying something had been repaired, but then the same problem happened again, when I tried to boot up the pc the next day.

I also noticed that Config. As far as i am aware i have not implemented any software or hardware changes recently, which is what most microsoft help documents indicated the problem is. What do i do? I am at a loss, and am scared to turn my pc off, in case i can't start it up again.

Most systems you can access the bios by hitting the delete key during the initial startup, most often your screen will be dark during this process, just hit del several times, it should take you to the bios.

The boot order is generally found under the boot menu. Make sure that the cd or dvd rom, which ever you may have is listed first.

Once this is set hit F10, select yes, and the system will restart, you should have the xp cd in as it should immediatley try booting from the cd. Now if it boots from the cd It will get to a point where it will ask you if you would like to install a fresh copy or repair your current install.

It said I had a system error and went into a memory dump. It said I might be able to reinstall or repair said file by putting in my system CD and follow the prompts to the Recovery Console. Windows will not come up. At this point it asks which Windows installation do I want to do and gives me only one option - [1. Now logic tells me that I should have another option since the info I want is on the CD in my D: drive. But alas, I can not get there. So I took the only option it gave me. I found the list of commands available to me but I am not sure which command I should use to fix my problem.

I also considered just reinstalling XP over the old files and hopefully the file that needs replaced will be installed. I know that when we were using WIN98 we could do that and it would work. But when I started a reinstallation of XP over the old one it informed me that I may loose the My Documents folder among other settings I may have set-up in Windows. I can not retrieve the My Documents folder and I can not risk losing it. Any thoughts? If I have no choice but to reinstall XP, can I install over the old files?

And if so, will all of the other programs and software be affected? Thanks for whatever help you can send my way.
